I believe mrwood's proposed fix isnt going to help.  As it just 
strips the first character if it's \w or :

perhaps when he suggested $module =~ s/^([A-Za-z0-9]|:)//g; he ment 
$module =~ s/[^A-Za-z0-9:]//g;
